Import knowledge

Frequently asked questions.

Everything you need to know about importing a vehicle with Autohaus Zwer - transparent, simple and easy to understand.

This FAQ answers the most important questions about importing EU vehicles to Austria. You will find answers about costs, process, required documents, transport, safety and registration - structured by topic and available without registration.

Basics & benefits

Why should I buy a car abroad?

The EU used-car market is much larger than the Austrian market and often offers better prices and a wider choice of models and equipment. Even after import costs, importing can be worthwhile.

Can I handle the import myself?

In theory, yes. In practice, mistakes with contracts, NoVA, documents or registration can delay or increase the cost of the import. That is why many customers use an experienced team.

Which vehicles can be imported?

Passenger cars, estates, SUVs, sports cars and electric vehicles from the EU can generally be imported. The required EU documents, such as the COC certificate, must be available.

From which countries can vehicles be imported?

We import vehicles from EU countries. Germany is especially popular because of its market size and price advantages, but Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and other EU countries are also possible.

Costs & payment

What does an EU vehicle import to Austria cost?

Total costs include NoVA, transport, official documents, our handling fee and optional inspection. Electric vehicles are exempt from NoVA. Our online calculator gives you a transparent estimate.

Is importing from Germany cheaper than buying in Austria?

In many cases, yes. The German market is much larger, creating more competition and often lower prices. For suitable vehicles, a relevant saving often remains after all import costs.

Which costs arise during import?

Typical costs are NoVA, official documents, insured transport, our handling fee and optionally a vehicle inspection. Exact amounts depend on the car and location.

How is NoVA calculated?

NoVA, the Austrian standard consumption tax, depends on factors such as first registration, CO2 emissions, consumption and vehicle price. Our calculator makes these factors transparent.

How do I pay for the vehicle?

You pay the vehicle price directly to the dealer. You receive a separate invoice from Autohaus Zwer for services such as transport, NoVA processing and official steps.

Are there hidden costs?

No. All known costs are disclosed in advance. If an adjustment becomes necessary later, it is handled transparently by additional invoice or credit note.

Can I import an electric car from the EU?

Yes. Electric vehicles are exempt from NoVA in Austria, which removes the largest import cost block. The process remains the same: vehicle selection, purchase handling, transport and registration.

Safety & protection

Is there a warranty on imported vehicles?

The warranty or statutory guarantee agreed in the purchase contract with the dealer applies. Autohaus Zwer is responsible for proper import handling.

What happens if the vehicle has defects?

We recommend buying from reputable commercial dealers. An independent inspection can also be ordered before purchase to better assess the vehicle condition.

Can I view the vehicle before purchase?

Yes. You can arrange an inspection with the dealer. Video viewings or an independent on-site inspection are also possible.

What is a vehicle report and do I need one?

A vehicle report is a technical check by an independent expert. It is not mandatory, but especially useful for higher-value vehicles.

How safe is buying via mobile.de or AutoScout24?

Both platforms are among Europe's largest vehicle marketplaces. We recommend buying from commercial dealers and adding a DEKRA inspection where useful.

Process

How does the purchase work?

You instruct Autohaus Zwer to handle the import and grant us the required power of attorney. We take care of the purchase contract, import formalities and transport.

How long does the import process take?

Timing depends on the dealer, general importer, authorities and carrier. In practice, you should usually expect about 2 to 4 weeks.

Do I have to travel abroad myself?

No. We organize the process from the purchase contract to delivery ready for registration in Austria.

What happens if the vehicle is no longer available?

If a vehicle is sold before the process can be completed, we cancel the order and refund your money.

Transport & delivery

Is transport insured?

Yes. We work with professional carriers whose transports are appropriately insured.

What happens in case of an accident during transport?

In the unlikely event of damage, the carrier's transport insurance applies. We support the claims process.

What is the difference between standard and express transport?

Standard transport runs via planned routes and is cheaper. Express transport is a prioritized direct delivery, faster but more expensive.

Registration & documents

Will I receive Austrian documents?

Yes. We organize the vehicle documents you need for registration in Austria.

Do you also handle insurance registration?

Insurance registration is usually done by you with your preferred insurer. We provide the required vehicle data and documents.

Which documents do I need for vehicle import?

Required documents include COC certificate, purchase contract, vehicle papers, power of attorney, personal data and a valid ID. After you place the order, we organize most of the paperwork.
