Calculate NoVA before importing a car to Austria

The calculator is intended for buyers who want to import a vehicle from Germany or another EU country to Austria and need a realistic cost estimate before purchase.

It uses the CO2 value, purchase price, first registration, fuel type, vehicle location and Austrian delivery location to estimate NoVA, transport, documents and service costs.

The result is an orientation based on the available vehicle data. It is not a binding authority assessment and can change if listing data is incomplete or incorrect.

Data needed for a useful estimate

  • Works with mobile.de, AutoScout24 and manual vehicle data
  • Useful before signing a purchase contract or paying a deposit
  • Shows NoVA, CO2 value, first registration, purchase price, transport and documents
  • Helps assess whether importing from Germany to Austria is financially sensible

Importing a car from Germany to Austria: which costs apply?

When importing a car from Germany to Austria, the listing price alone is not enough. The relevant figure is the full cost until Austrian registration.

Typical cost items are NoVA, possible CO2 surcharge, insured transport, Austrian type certificate and import handling. For some vehicles, an inspection is also recommended.

The calculator displays these items separately so you can see whether the price advantage remains after NoVA, transport and documents.

What is NoVA?

Normverbrauchsabgabe (NoVA) is an Austrian tax due when a vehicle is registered in Austria for the first time. It applies to new cars and imported used vehicles from the EU.

The amount depends on CO2 emissions, net purchase price, first registration, fuel type and origin country. Fully electric vehicles are exempt; for used cars, the age reduction lowers the amount.

CO2 emissions

The WLTP CO2 value determines the NoVA percentage. Lower emissions mean lower tax.

Net purchase price

The NoVA percentage is applied to the vehicle price excluding VAT.

First registration

The date determines the applicable legal rules and the age reduction for used cars.

Fuel type

Electric vehicles are exempt; petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles are calculated from their values.

CO2 surcharge

High CO2 values can trigger an additional surcharge.

Current thresholds

The calculator automatically uses the applicable NoVA rules.

Questions about NoVA calculation

How is NoVA calculated in Austria?

For passenger cars, NoVA mainly depends on the official WLTP CO2 value, net purchase price, first registration and possible deductions or surcharges. For used vehicles, the amount is reduced by the age reduction.

Do I pay NoVA when importing a car from Germany?

Yes, if the vehicle is registered in Austria for the first time and no exemption applies. Fully electric vehicles are currently NoVA-free; for hybrids, the official CO2 value is decisive.

Which documents are needed for a NoVA estimate?

Important documents and data include purchase contract or invoice, COC or vehicle data, first registration, WLTP CO2 value, fuel type and taxation details.

Is the NoVA calculator binding?

No. The calculator provides a careful orientation based on available vehicle data. The final authority assessment and vehicle documents are binding.

What does importing a car from Germany to Austria cost?

The total consists of vehicle price, NoVA, transport, type certificate or approval data, service package and optional services such as inspection. The calculator lists these items for a specific vehicle.
